80's Gospel Choir Reunite to Dance to the Beat of Professional Drummer!
Founded in 1979 in Birmingham, West Midlands, a dynamic group of young people were handpicked under the watchful eye of Choir director Pamela McIntyre. The Highgate Gospel Choir (HGC) quickly rose to fame throughout the 80s and has been a timeless gem in the UK’s crown. Ministering up and down the country at a host of various churches and concerts. With a unique sound and a God-given gift, their ability to change the atmosphere whilst ministering became their calling card. In March of 1984, HGC ministered at Wandsworth Civic Hall. The show was recorded to produce their debut album, “Oh How Good is The Lord''. Little did they know, hidden amongst the screaming fans, was a budding drummer named Donavan Hepburn. “The energy that emanated off of them literally made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!” As the youngest of his family, Donavan recounts fond memories of his older siblings being members of the choir and how the sound of the choir formed the soundtrack of his youth. “Saturdays were always buzzing with the excitement of my siblings getting ready to head out to another concert” In a symphonic twist, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the ‘choirs' inaugural album, Hepburn - Drummer and Musical Director whose CV boasts Jeff Lynne’s ELO, James Bay and Take That - has between tours turned his hand to the role of record producer and has managed to mastermind a plan to relight the fire of these, almost forgotten, greats to record a reunion album, titled ‘The Legacy Project’. A career spanning almost three decades Donavan has worked with some of the UK’s biggest musical sensations; now including the Highgate Gospel Choir. He’s even managed to round up the OG producers and musicians for this epic reunion album, paying tribute to their legendary legacy. He shared his experience recording the reunion album “Even after 40 years, it’s like they’d been singing together this whole time!” Following the release of their first single, a reimagined version of the 1985 title track "How Good is the Lord," on 3rd November, 2023; HGC had the privilege of performing with Tony Christie at Lambeth Palace Library. Their performance took place at the Together Coalition’s End of Year Celebration for the Archbishop of Canterbury and was showcased on BBC Breakfast. The Choir is thrilled to be reunited, sharing their talents with the world and reliving past moments of joy. HGC is also delighted to announce that they will be headlining their own concert, hosted by B-Music at Town Hall Birmingham on 15th June 2024. "Prayer Changes Things' was released on March 1st as HGC's second single, accompanied by a range of exclusive merchandise. The public was also informed about the official release date of the upcoming album, 'The Legacy Project'. Tickets for the album launch event at Town Hall can now be bought on the B-Music platform.
Bridging the Gap
My grandfather, Bishop Percival Rupert James Williams, affectionately known as 'PRJ', was one of the founding pastors of the Highgate District, where HGC originated 40 years ago. He was a man of great integrity and honesty, who spread love throughout his community. PRJ always emphasised prioritising the Lord above all and his family second. The Highgate Gospel Choir held a special place in PRJ's large family, and just before completing the recording of their upcoming album in May 2023, Executive Producer Donavan Hepburn requested my coordination for HGC's forthcoming albums photoshoot in June 2023. PRJ and his First Lady, Sis Ludiana, had three daughters, two of whom are involved in this reunion album, while the eldest daughter, my mother is the choir's biggest supporter. As I contemplated this responsibility, I felt honoured to uncover aspects of their legacy and contribute to the narrative of the current U.K. Gospel scene. Since the photo shoot, I have been collaborating closely with Don and am dedicated to supporting HGC tell their story through various bespoken services with a rose-coloured lens.
